The Lackey Softball team finished their first week of competition playing .500 ball as they enter this week of play at an even record of 2-2. After dropping the opening two games to Leonardtown and Patuxent, the Lady Chargers rebounded to beat Great Mills on the road and Westlake at home to close out the week.
Junior Madison Furman was dominant in all four games, striking out a total 26 batters including 10 against the Hornets on Thursday night in helping to lead her team to a dramatic 8-4 win. Junior Madison Kuhn was taken out of the game with an injury which prompted a lineup change and forced freshman Paige Hill to take over behind the plate. She played a stellar game defensively and was also dominant offensively. Freshman Danielle Monopoli, freshman Emma Shumpert, and junior Deja Brown also secured timely hits in helping the Chargers score their most runs of the season up to that point.
On Friday, the Chargers defended their home field with an 18-3 victory over the Westlake Wolverines. Sophomore Shelby McBain scored the first run of the game and then connected on an inside-the-park grand slam in a game that featured a plethora of hits from the young team.
The Chargers have three games this week as they open at home against St. Charles on Monday and then travel to McDonough (Wednesday) and Calvert (Friday) to round out the week.
