It is our pleasure to announce that Christian Shelton has received the J-100 AFJROTC Character-in-Leadership Scholarship. This scholarship, which recognizes the character and leadership developed in the AFJROTC Program, was established by former U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff (CSAF) General David L. Goldfein. This will provide 100 cadets all over the world with a full four-year ROTC college scholarship, including room and board, at select Minority Serving Institutions, Historic Black Colleges and Universities, and Hispanic Serving Institutions. This effort makes pursuing a commission in the United States Air Force while earning a college degree a reality for many cadets in the Air Force’s most diverse program.
There were over 125,000 cadets that applied across 880 units worldwide. Cadet Shelton was 1 of 100 to receive the scholarship and 1 of 6 in the state of Maryland. The other MD high schools were Eleanor Roosevelt (1), Baltimore Polytechnic (1), North Point (1) and Oxen Hill (2). When Cadet Shelton was selected as one of the 300 finalists, she was required to answer questions by way of a panel interview. As you would imagine, this is where she shined the brightest.
Lieutenant Colonel Moret described her as a leader who cares and someone you can always count on. While she is a standout cadet and athlete in our building, she has always shown a great sense of ethical awareness. She is, without a doubt, a leader in our building and our community. In addition to being a member of our AFJROTC program, Christian is a football and basketball cheerleader, a 4.0 student, and is currently ranked 26th in the Class of 2021. As a result of her work ethic, she met both the academic and physical fitness standards that were required of the applicants. Since this was the first year the scholarship was offered, we are confident that Christian will set the standard for what a J100 scholarship recipient will uphold to in the future.
Farquharson remarked that “Christian is easily one of the hardest working athletes that has ever come through Lackey Cheer and is the epitome of all that the Charger Spirit stands for. She gives 110% every single day, without being asked and without a single complaint. In AFJROTC, in cheerleading, in the classroom, and in the community, Christian is an absolutely incredible young lady and excels in everything she does. We are all so very proud of her and can’t wait to see what the future holds.”
